Kindermusik ABC Music and Me

Posted on April 21, 2008. Filed under: Family Time (all ages), Kindermusik, Kindermusik Curriculum | Tags: , , , , , |

ABC Music & Me is specifically designed for use in a daycare or preschool setting.   Weekly classes are presented by a Kindermusik educator, and these classes are held onsite as an enhancement program.  There are two age groups for this program; 2 – 4 years old, and 4 – 6 years old.

For each different age group, there is a different theme for each month, with corresponding home materials kit which includes a CD and a colorful catalog, as well as weekly reports from the teacher.

Every other month, Kindermusik International also includes a high quality instrument to help the students explore sounds, and how to turn sounds into music.

Themes in the 2 – 4 age range focus on themes that are familiar and interesting to the children.  These programs use music and movement to enhance development of age appropriate skills and understanding of concepts.

This “Carnival of Music” is scheduled for September.

Themes in the 4 – 6 age range use movement and multi-sensory activities to create a basic musical understanding, develop their fine motor skills that to play a variety of instruments

“Jumping Beans” is also scheduled for September.

Kindermusik International, and it’s educators, place a high value on parent involvement.  And so most of the core curriculum are designed to include full parent participation, or, in the older classrooms, participation during the last portion of the class.  Both the students and the parents benefit a great deal from their involvement in class, and also from the unique follow through that occurs at home as well.

But due to many factors in this fast paced world, more children are spending their days in learning facilities outside the home.  In order to fully reach more children and families with the marvalous process of music, and all of its benefits, Kindermusik International designed ABC Music & Me as a high quality music program that allows facilities to provide music instruction on site, AND for the parents to receive monthly materials that help them join their child in this process at home.

Some educators also use this program with children AND their families.  It is easily adapted for the interactive process where parents CAN continue to participate with their child in wonderfully creative ways that continue to benefit the development of the whole child, as well as their musical understanding and abilities.

Enjoying FREE outdoor concerts with your children

Posted on April 19, 2008. Filed under: Activity Ideas, Florida Music, For Your Enjoyment | Tags: , , , , , |

Attending a live concert with your whole family is a fabulous experience, especially when it is outdoors, and you can feel so much more comfortable to participate in ACTIVE listening with your children.   My very active daughter has a tough time being still, unless she is sleeping, so we do a lot of hand motions, and body rhythms to help the music come alive so she can truly enjoy it.  We also try to:

  • Pretend to direct the music.
  • Find an open space and dance the way the music makes us feel, using scarves or streamers if possible.
  • Tap the steady beat on different parts of the child’s body, moving up to the head for the high notes, and down to the toes on the low notes.
  • My older child (12), and I like to close our eyes and listen, then describe the images that the music illicits in our imaginations.
  • Take paper and have them draw what they hear.

In each community, there are plenty of opportunities for live music, but sometimes it is difficult to find concerts that are appropriate for very young children.  In this blog, we will focus on finding opportunities, and links to opportunities to find fabulous live music that is appropriate for young children with their families.  Many of these are annual events, such as the one listed below, and you will find others just by clicking on FLORIDA MUSIC in the category to the right.  Please make sure to check out the Friends of Florida Folk website (mentioned in another blog)- they have a full calendar of individual events (a few are appropriate for young children, and list all their annual events as well (many of which are appropriate for young children, AND the whole family).  I’ll also try to list some of my favorite Florida musicians who specialize in children’s music.

FREE CONCERTS!

In April and May each year, The Florida Orchestra invites you to pack a picnic basket, grab a blanket, and come out to the park to hear your orchestra play under the stars in Tampa and Clearwater.
.
  • The vibrations coming from live music are like nothing that a child can get from a recorded piece of music.  The music resonates in our heads and our bodies in a whole different way, illiciting more physical responses, and empathetic emotions.  (This is proven through extensive research.)
  • Hearing the different sounds of the instruments (the timbres) trains a child’s ear to identify the different characteristics of sounds in the world around him.
  • Watching the musicians play together provides a great lesson on what happens when you work in coordination with a group of people.
  • It also tends to inspire children to make music of their own, both now, and in the future with real instruments.

Merry Melodies with that live music!
   Debbie Mondale

Bing Futch plays a dulcimer with 2 fretboards

Posted on April 18, 2008. Filed under: Florida Music, For Your Enjoyment | Tags: , , , |

While enjoying the wonderful music at the Will McLean Festival (www.willmclean.com ), my daughter had fallen asleep in my lap, which allowed me to stay for a new performer I had not heard before – Bing Futch, and his dulcimer with two fretboards.  The instrument is amazing, the music is amazing, and Bing, himself, is so personable that you feel immediately accepted, and invited to share in the joy of the dulcimer.

Bing is located in Orlando, and plays all over Florida, as well as many music festivals around the USA.  From my understanding, there are only 5 dulcimers like this in the world.  One fretboard is tuned to the key of D, the other is tuned to the key of G.

Check out his Dulcamerica Podcast #65

This podcast includes a little blues action and then a song demo of “The Ballad of John Henry”, both in DAD tuning. Couple of notes: intermittent digital distortion on left side of frame is from re-using video tapes (cost-saver, bad move) and there are audio cameo appearances by the Loudest Cessna In The World and Sluefoot Sue, the cat who would be a balladeer.

To find out more about Bing Futch, his music, and performance schedule, and his very unique ways of providing instruction (including live streaming video instruction through your computer), check out his website:  http://www.darkstudios.com/

Sharing the Joy of Kindermusik with Seniors

Posted on April 1, 2008. Filed under: Family Time (all ages), KI Village - babies, Unique Programs | Tags: , , , |

Jennye w-SeniorsBy Jennye Shaling

I just wanted to share for a moment how special it is to experience a Kindermusik Class with Seniors.  In a “Village with Seniors” class, the Seniors love watching and interacting with the moms and their babies.

One semester, there was a class, in which, our elderly senior friend, “Annie” (now deceased )held one of the babies. The young mother sat very close to Annie and let her hold her precious bundle of joy. She whispered into the young mother’s ear,” I have never held a baby”.  I must admit when her secret was shared, we all cried! What an unforgettable memory…  In a “Family Time” class with Seniors, we all enjoy singing and sharing our instruments. You can hear the laughter down the hall as the toddlers and preschoolers “dust dust dust” the wheelchairs with their scarves.  Won’t you consider sharing your joy through Kindermusik with a Senior Home near you?  What’s available in your community?  See top tab for “Find an Educator”.  If they are not currently offering that, let them know you are interested.
